About the Role

The NICU Care Manager is a key leadership role within Neonatal Services at the Women’s, responsible for coordinating patient flow and ensuring the safe, efficient delivery of care across the NICU. This position is ideally suited to an experienced neonatal nurse with exceptional organisational, communication and stakeholder engagement skills.

Working closely with multidisciplinary teams, the NICU Care Manager oversees the operational coordination of admissions, transfers and discharges, ensuring infants and their families experience a seamless journey through the service. The role is responsible for confirming clinical readiness for transfer or discharge, coordinating with receiving hospitals and neonatal transport services, and ensuring all documentation and processes meet the Women’s standards.

The NICU Care Manager plays a critical role in maintaining patient flow and bed capacity while supporting continuity of care across the neonatal network. Through strong collaboration with internal teams and external partners, the role helps facilitate timely transitions of care and positive patient and family experiences.

In addition, the position contributes to quality improvement, patient safety and service development initiatives, supporting best-practice care coordination and innovative models of care. This is an exciting opportunity to influence service delivery, strengthen partnerships across the healthcare system and contribute to the Women’s commitment to excellence in neonatal care.

A regular day will see you

  • Coordinating a seamless, safe and family-integrated care journey for infants and their families from admission through to discharge.
  • Working collaboratively with medical, nursing and allied health teams to deliver integrated care and support shared decision-making.
  • Leading transfer and discharge planning, ensuring clinical readiness, complete documentation and effective communication with receiving services.
  • Supporting parents and carers to understand their infant’s care plan and build confidence in caring for their baby following discharge or transfer.
  • Liaising with external partners, including Maternal and Child Health services, neonatal transport providers and community-based healthcare teams, to promote continuity of care across the neonatal network.
  • Participating in ward rounds, multidisciplinary meetings and clinical discussions that coordinate and inform daily care delivery.
  • Identifying and escalating risks, resolving barriers to patient flow and contributing to quality, safety and service improvement initiatives.
  • Maintaining accurate records and ensuring all care coordination activities comply with organisational, professional and clinical standards.
  • Contributing to staff education, supporting best-practice care coordination and fostering a culture of continuous improvement across Neonatal Services.
