About the team
Badjurr-Bulok Wilam is dedicated to improving the health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women, patients, and their families through support, assistance, coordination and advocacy. This team is additionally responsible for highlighting matters impacting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health within the hospital and the broader community. Badjurr-Bulok Wilam is also responsible for working with hospital staff to increase cultural awareness and sensitivity of healthcare issues for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
About the role
In this leadership role you will lead and support the Badjurr-Bulok Wilam team. You will work collaboratively to advocate for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients and their families, and support the promotion of Indigenous patients’ health issues across the organisation and in the community.
A regular day will see you:
- Support teams in the formulation of culturally safe, competent, evidence-based care including admission and discharge planning as well as culturally safe bereavement care, advocacy, community liaison and referral
- Provide professional supervision, coaching and mentoring to the Badjurr-Bulok Wilam team, setting and evaluating performance goals, and support Aboriginal staff to navigate cultural load
- Participate in planning meetings within a multidisciplinary team to meet the care needs of the individual in the context of their circumstances, family, and community.
- Assist patients and their families to navigate the health system, understanding their treatment and medical terminology.
About you

You will be someone with excellent interpersonal and communication skills who has the ability to build strong working relationships with a wide range of stakeholders. You’ll possess a leadership style that is collaborative and engaging, with a commitment to providing excellence in patient care.
You’ll bring with you:
- Relevant experience working in public health services and/or Aboriginal community services and/or an accredited Bachelor’s degree in a recognised health field ie social sciences, public health or any other relevant qualification
- Sound knowledge and understanding of the relevance of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture, society and kinship networks in relation to the provision of healthcare
- Direct service experience in a complex environment working constructively to provide support and advocacy for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and their families
- Experience in providing training and education that improves the cultural sensitivity and accessibility of services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients and their families
- Demonstrated ability to lead a team, setting strategic goals and drive organisational change.
