About the team

The Women’s is Australia’s leading independent specialist hospital for women dedicated to improving the health and wellbeing of women of all ages and cultures, and newborn infants. The Women’s serves 80,000 patients annually, delivering more than 7,000 babies. The Women’s is the tertiary referral centre for high-risk obstetric patients in Melbourne and further afield in the state of Victoria and Australia-wide.

The Anaesthesia Department at the Women’s has an international reputation for its clinical care, research and training. Advanced training positions are available for trainees seeking further experience in anaesthesia for obstetrics and gynaecology. Fellowship will focus on high-risk obstetrics & maternal medicine, gynae-oncology and peri-operative medicine. The Women’s provides, among other services, abortion and contraception, assisted reproduction and women's emergency care. Fellows will be involved in multi-disciplinary meetings for care of high-risk patients, the complex care unit and the acute pain service. 

About the role

Fellows/Registrars work a basic 43 hours per week, and shifts include both in-hours and after-hours clinical work. Protected teaching is included within these hours which provides ample opportunity to pursue health informatics, education, audit and research activities. Our department also participates in regular simulation programs with the hospital simulation service for systems testing, quality improvement and education.

Fellows will receive training in a wide variety of skills including difficult neuraxial techniques, obstetric haemorrhage management, cardiac disease in pregnancy and obstetric airway management. Fellows will focus on high-risk obstetrics & maternal medicine, gynae-oncology and peri-operative medicine. The Women’s provides, among other services, abortion and contraception, assisted reproduction and women's emergency care. Fellows will be involved in multi-disciplinary meetings for care of high-risk patients, the complex care unit and the acute pain service. We offer regular complex caesarean section lists and antenatal anaesthetic assessment clinics exclusively to fellows during their term.

Senior registrars will focus on strengthening fundamental skills in advanced obstetric and gynaecological anaesthesia. Volume of practice will emphasize labour ward, emergency theatre, elective caesarean section lists, general gynaecology, abortion services and anaesthetic assessment clinic. Active involvement in departmental education activities is expected. 

 

About you

Fellow position

  • A trainee anaesthetist in the last year of training or equivalent or an anaesthetist in the immediate post-fellowship provisional year.
  • An approved trainee of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists at Provisional Fellow (PFY) level.
  • We welcome overseas applicants in an approved anaesthetic training scheme in their own country with equivalent fellowship-ready experience

 

Senior Registrar position

  • A trainee anaesthetist with the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists who has at least two years of anaesthetic training experience.
  • An approved trainee of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists advanced trainee year 1 or 2 (ATY1 or 2) level.
  • We welcome overseas applicants in an approved anaesthetic training schemes in their own country with at least three years anaesthetic experience

 

Additional notes for successful overseas candidates

  • An observation period at the start of the term will be applied to determine equivalency to Australian training standards
  • Upon completion, candidates will be classified into Senior Registrar or Fellow roles with duties allocated appropriate to individual level

The Classification and Salary scale will be dependent on experience and you will be appointed and in accordance to the Australian Medical Association (Victoria) Doctors in Training Agreement 2022-2026.
